Help Kamal---A piece of persuasive writing to fundraise for visually impaired children

Kamal Kamat

Dear Ms. Leopold,

You won’t believe that the girl with a big sweet smile in the above photo never smiled one week ago. The girl is named Kamala Kamat, 7 years old, living in Bihar, the poorest area in Northern India. She has been living in the darkness since she was born. Being visually impaired, she almost lost everything---The opportunity to get educated, to make friends, to have a family……

Her father knew there is a surgery which can restore his daughter’s eyesight, but the impoverished farmer could not afford it. He wanted to borrow some money from his relatives and friends. But they refused to lend money with an excuse that girls are not worthy to invest money.

After trying for many years, Kamala’s father was about to give up when he saw a small newspaper ad about us---the Vision of Children Foundation offering free surgery for the blind. He and his daughter traveled miles from Bihar to New Delhi to reach our partner hospital where we met them. The surgery only took less than 20 minutes, but Kamala waited for 7 years. She cried like a baby when she opened her eyes and saw a colorful world. Her father and we moved to tears too.

Kamala and other visually impaired children are the reason why we established the Vision of Children Foundation in 1991— to encourage research and support projects focused on treating and eradicating genetic vision disorders. Since then we've been a pioneering force in vision research, setting the stage for what we now know to be a solution to genetic vision disorders. We believe that fundraising is a great way to help us in the fight against hereditary childhood blindness and vision disorders. We are planning to raise $1,00,000 USD till the end of this year. Please encourage your friends and family to participate with you.

Because of donors’ generosity, over 28 years we have helped over 30000 visually impaired children like Kamala to restore her eyesight after surgeries we offered. They are enjoying a colorful life now. A minimal donation of $20 USD (tax-deductible )can make this happen and make a difference for blind children ’s lives. It only takes one gift to save a child from a lifetime of suffering. To thank you, we will aslo send you a photo of and a letter from the child we have helped.

We can not think of a better gift to visually impaired children.Kamala and other children sincerely appreciate your help.

For the children,

Lotus Xuelian Chen
